| Akraia villa.
Aphrodite was the goddess of love. According to mythology she was born from the foam of the sea off the shore of Paphos. She had a prestigious sanctuary in Pilaipafos (present Kouklia) where she was worshipped for nearly 2000 years. She was the Great Goddess of Cyprus.
Aphrodite was called Aphrodite Akraia, which means Aphrodite of the Heights. Her temples were often built on top of hills, as at Palaipafos and Amathus. There was also a sanctuary of Aphrodite Akraia on top of a hill, at the extreme end of the Akamas peninsula. An inscription of the 1st cent. A.D. from the Paphos area records an offering to our Akraia Aphrodite.
